Hybrid Power Skid

The Hybrid Power Skid concept was developed during a Phase II SBIR to Quantalux. The design incorporates a micro grid & biogas generator to reduce energy costs at municipal wastewater treatement plants. The innovative behind-the-meter approach can produce power during peak periods, maximizing the value of biogas.

This Phase I SBIR sought to find the best use for biogas produced at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The overall goal was to quantify financial benefits based on current cost of energy and potential environmental credits. Our team used standard financial measurements such as Return on Investment (ROI) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) to quantify the viability of biogas- based on energy production.

 

The project also evaluated using biogas as a feedstock for Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). This approach was much more promising since both federal and state programs will pay a premium for RNG. RNG can be produced at WWTPs, dairies, and landfills, and as a result the potential market is much larger than just wastewater treatment plants.

Peak Shaving

The Hybrid Power Skid uses onsite power during the day when energy from the power grid is the most expensive. By alternating the sources of electricity, energy costs for the plant are significantly lower.

Utilizing Greenhouse Gasses

Biogas is a natural byproduct of the wastewater treatment process. Plants typically burn this gas off releasing great amounts of methane into the atmosphere. The Hybrid Power Skid will use this gas to help power the plant.
